TAM 570: Spectral Methods for CFD --- Fall 2021

About the Course

Course page under construction. The following is subject to change.

Spectral Element Flow Simulation

Spectral methods are among the most efficient approaches to simulation of turbulent flows. In this course students will learn how and why these methods work. They will write their own 3D spectral and multidomain spectral flow solvers in matlab that will allow exploration of state-of-the-art numerical methods and basic turbulent flow and heat transfer. We will cover all aspects of these methods, including numerical analysis, iterative solvers, high-order semi-implicit timesteppers, fast matrix-free operator evaluation and inversion. We will explore numerous motivating examples, with model problems from numerical analysis of PDEs to stability, transition, and turbulence in incompressible flows. In addition, students will learn how to set up and solve thermal-fluids problems using the high-performance spectral element codes, Nek5000/RS.
